Ping works one way only

My setup is xp home on both desktop and laptop, network  topography is Desktop > edimax Fast ethernet switch > Laptop.

I have just discovered that when I ping from laptop to Desktop and get timed out if I then ping the other way (from desktop to laptop) I can then sucsesfull ping laptop to desktop, can any one tell me what this means ?

You have enabled the wireless adapter on the laptop?

It tells me that you have a firewall, that is blocking pings to your
desktop. You'll need to add the IP address of the laptop to the trusted
locations in your firewall. You'll also want to check that your firewall is
not set to block pings.

chk if its getting valid IP address that the router will have if using DHCP
or there is a and IP conflict
