Consider purchasing a wireless router to connect to the broadband
modem. That way, both laptops will be able to connect from anywhere
in your home PLUS you will have the added security of NAT and
hopefully a hardware firewall to protect you from many things. Also
you won't have to leave the laptop connected to the broadband modem
always turned on.

You can set up Internet Connection Sharing if you don't want to do
this and use an ad hoc wireless network. I don't recommend this for
permanent use.

Routers have gotten very inexpensive, but you should buy the best
one you can afford and check that it has a Windows logo.

you made a great decision. be sure to set up WPA2 or at least WPA
for security when the new wireless router arrives. which one did you
order?

Did you go ahead with the ad-hoc network. If so please let me know your
experience with it.

If you had problems - here's a good article.
