Ad hoc connection working, but ICS not working. Any help?I have a desktop running ME with a dial up connection, and a laptop running
XP with a wireless connection to the desktop. I can transfer files in a limited way using the desktop (cannot use laptop to move files to the desktop, but can used desktop to move files back and forth to the laptop), and cannot get any internet connection for the laptop. Im using linksys wireless g WEP encrypted. Anyone know something I might not have set up correctly for the ICS? Also, I keep running into the XPs need to enter a password to access the shared files on the desktop. Any help is truly appreciated. Thanks. Thanks. > Brian > You also should know that WEP encryption -- which unfortunately is the best you can do with XP in an ad hoc network -- is quite easily cracked these days. You really should buy yourself a wireless router. They're not very expensive, and in addition to permitting the use of better encryption, will provide you a layer of protection (NAT plus, in many cases, a built-in firewall) from Internet nasties. I cant use a router because they require a high speed connection and I don't have that. Also, I do have ICS set up on the ME desktop already. What gives you the idea that its not set up? Its like having a crossover ethernet cable between them. They worked fine with the cable, and shared the internet connection. They just wont do it over wireless for some reason. Ill look into the IP addresses, but Im not sure that is the problem. The DHCP is what is assigning the IPs now. Your desktop appears to have 4 network adapters. Because the one with the external IP address is called "ICSHARE" perhaps what you have done is to enable ICS but share the Internet connection with one of the network adapters that is NOT the wireless adapter, most likely the HP EN1207D-TX 10/100 Family Adapter. What I can tell, as explained below, is that you have not shared the Internet connection with the wireless adapter in your desktop. [I just re-read your post and saw the statement, "They worked fine with the cable." If you previously had set this system up using ICS and a cross-over cable and it was working fine, you almost certainly have shared the Internet connection with the Ethernet adapter in the desktop, as I guessed in the paragraph above. You have to re-configure ICS to share the Internet connection with the wireless adapter, and then things will work.] You say that "The DHCP is what is assigning the IPs now." It's is not, and that's exactly the point. "Normally," a DHCP server DOES assign IP addresses. But because you don't have a router, there is no DHCP server in your local network to assign these addresses. Your ISP has a DHCP server. It has indeed assigned an IP address: 216.50.243.13. That IP address was assigned, by your ISP, to the connection identified as "ICSHARE Adapter." What is this device? As an aside, the IP address indicated for the DHCP server, 255.255.255.255, is incorrect, so there is something peculiar going on here. The IP address 216.50.243.13 identifies you to the Internet. For example, if you go to http://www.whatismyip.com/ (or a similar website), this is the IP address that will be reported (note that it may change each time you connect to your ISP). You can only connect ONE computer (at a time) directly to your ISP, and you only get ONE IP address from your ISP. The other computers in your "local area network" do NOT get their IP addresses from the ISP. These computers get their IP addresses in one of three ways: 1. From a router, which has its own built-in DHCP server. You don't have one of these. 2. From Windows ICS, which includes a software DHCP server (ICS calls this a "DHCP Allocator"). The ICS DHCP Allocator ALWAYS generates IP addresses in the range 192.168.0.2 to 192.168.0.254. 3. From Windows itself. This is called "Automatic Private IP Addressing" or APIPA. APIPA addresses are ALWAYS in the in the private range 169.254.0.1 to 169.254.255.254. You are correct. Your computers are set up to talk to each other using the two wireless adapters instead of a crossover cable. These two adapters have IP addresses of 169.254.4.40 and 169.254.177.184. Although these two addresses are on the same subnet and can therefore communicate with each other, they are assigned by APIPA, and not by an ICS DHCP allocator.
