Have three laptops.
two brand new - both built in -G wireless.
one older but with -G capability built in.
Have Three different wireless routers.
all connect hardwaired to the internet through DSL modem.
Currently Linksys WRT54G hooked up and talking through it right now.
This one has the latest firmware installed.
None of the laptops will connect wirelessly to any of the wireless routers.
All laptops see local hotspots and do connect without trouble to any that I
visit.
One laptop occassionally sees my router and always sees my neighbors router.
My router is 15 feet from the laptop and no walls.
When it does see my router and I try to connect, it will not.
I have set the routers for WEP, no encryption, all of the US Channels
avalable.
I have been on the phone with tech support for FIVE hours.
All they do is read from a book.

That's very strange indeed. A live proof that nothing strange is 100% impossible and can occur sometime.

MAC address filtering in all 3 routers??
