Wireless networking issues - not seen/can't connect

This network's just not cooperating.
Setup:
WRT54G wireless router.
Desktop
Laptop
Both systems connecting wirelessly.
Both using XP Home SP2, completely updated.

Shared:
Laptop - one folder.
Desktop - Printer and two folders.

From the Laptop -
I can see, but not connect to, the desktop unless the desktop's firewall is
off. With the firewall off (using only the Windows Firewall from XP SP2,) I
can browse and print to the shared printer hanging off the desktop
immediately.

Also, with "Show icons for networked UPnP devices" selected, the router
shows.

From the desktop -
I can't see the laptop at all. Net View also only gives the desktop name.
(From the laptop, I see both systems with net view, even with the firewall.)
Disabling the firewall on both systems makes no difference.

With UPnP selected, in Network Places I don't see the router either.
(Obviously with it set to hide, I shouldn't anyway...) (Correction, it just
decided to show up as I typed this out.)

.... I'm not sure just where to look to fix this though.

File and Printer sharing is enabled on both machines, it's checked in the
windows firewall as an exception. They're on the same workgroup (default
MSHome.) For laughs, I took the notebook in right by the router, just in case
it was an issue with the signal or something... no good. It's still not seen
from the desktop.

Hi
Successful Sharing involves some general consideration in Network settings,
http://www.ezlan.net/sharing.html
As well as specific adjustment of each computer according to what it is
allowed to be shared.

.... all of which, from looking through the forum before, I've done (and knew
ahead of time.)

And none of which helped.
