Why don't the numbers match the performance?

Why is it I have such slow performance in this scenerio?  I have a
FIOS connection, 15Mb.  My system connected via CAT5 to the router
runs fine.  But my wireless system in another room is very slow.  But
the wireless connection (Netgear USB) reports anywhere from 24 to
54Mbs, but always in excess of the incoming 15Mb.  Based on that I
would think the performance should be the same as my hardwired system.

Can somebody help me with this?

The glaring difference is at the second hop, which I believe is out of
the router (192.168.1.1).  Why would this be?

Wireless is never going to be as fast as a wired connection. What
Netgear reports is the data rate and not the speed. see
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/expert/bowman_80211gspec.mspx

lots of things impact the actual speeds you see. distance,
interference, number of walls. mirrors, HVAC devices and appliances.

Jack (MVP-Networking).
Hi
Reporting of Network Bandwidth (speed) is one of a biggest travesty to
End-User consumer.
The number quoted are Not really the Numbers of actual transfer but rather
the theoretical capacity (or frequency of operation) of the Devices.
The actual traffic is grossly affected by the whole system and usually not
even close to the Number reported.
