This is an old problem that i've seen before but can't remember how I
fixed it. Unfortunately, all the "solutions" I've found by Googling are
to create matching usernames on all machines.
I've got two Samba servers - -redshift -and -postbag -- and connect to
them with two XP machines and a Mac.
One XP machine and the Mac prompt me for username and password, I enter
them, and everything works as expected on both -redshift -and -postbag-.
The other XP machine - -testlap -- prompts for username/password when
connecting to -postbag -and works as expected, however, when trying to
connect to -redshift -it doesn't prompt for username/password and after
a short while comes back with the error
\"YOU DO NOT HAVE PERMISSION TO CONNECT TO \\REDSHIFT\HOMES. CONTACT
YOUR SYSTEM ADMIN.....\"
(can't remember the exact wording, but it's a standard XP error).
Looking at the Samba logs on -redshift -I can see that the reason it's
failing is because it (-testlap-) is trying to connect as user
Administrator - the user I'm logged onto testlap as - which doesn't
exist on -redshift-.
This isn't a Samba-specific problem as I've had the same problem
between two Windows boxes before. It's something to do with XP thinking
- or behaving as though - it has been told to remember the
username/password.
Both XP machines are running XP Pro + SP2 + all current updates, i.e.
exactly the same version of XP.
IIRC there is a "hidden" dialogue somewhere in XP that allows you to
tell XP to forget all network passwords.
Please don't suggest that I create a user called Adminstrator on
-redshift -as this is not possible and should not be necessary as the
other machine works fine, as does the Mac, and -testlap -can also
connect OK to -postbag-.
Thanks. ...
