Sharing printer problem

I set up my desktop and laptop with the same workgroup name.  I then went to
desktop and  identified one of my direct connected printers as n"sharing" and
gave it a name.  Then I went to the laptop and used "add a printer".  Then
printer wizard  give two options  1)local printer attached to this computer
or  2) a netwowrk printer or printer attached to another printer.  I selected
#2.  Then on next page of wizard I click "connect to this printer"  and I
type in the name of the printer. I get a message "window cannot connect to
this printer"  The printer is not on a server - it is connected to my
desktop.  My laptop connects to the internet thru a router but I have no idea
how to get the laptop to be able to print thru the printer.

Thanks
Carl

The desktop computer is the server -- it's sharing its printer with
other computers.

Click "Connect to this printer", and type this in the "Name" field,
substituting the desktop's computer's name and the printer's share
name.

   \\desktop\printer
