No Internet Connectivity-Dialup and LAN

We recently loaded PeoplePC, as we only have dialup at home, on our two
laptops to do email. We were successful with one (Dell Latitude) but not the
other (Dell Inspiron). While the software says we have a connection, we get
an error when loading IE and that we have 'limited or no connectivity.' We
have also tried plugging in the Inspiron into my friends home broadband
network with similar results.

I have checked a few of the LAN settings and such to see what is different
between the two laptops and found little. The only thing I did find was with
the Inspiron is that there is no 'Ports' heading / folder in Device Manager.
I have no idea if this matters or not.

With this limited information, what should I be looking at, reinstalling,
changing, banging on to get going in the right direction?

Thanks in advance,
Scott

Dial-up analog modems do not show up in the Ports section of Device
Managrer.  Check for the 'Modem' section.
