Novice questionI bought a new computer. I still have the old one, which has 2
perfectly good hard drives on it. I use a LinkSys router so that I can go on line with my laptop. Is there any way I can use the router to give me access to those hard drives? Thanks, Gordon Both PC must be part of the same WORKGROUP
Both need to be connected to the router (wired or wireless.) Both need to "share" files/printers Both need "file/printer" share exception is firewall software (SP2) Gordon wrote: Show quoteHide quote > I bought a new computer. Thanks, Gordon Another solution is to remove the hard drives from the computer and put them into USB hard drive enclosures. They can then be attached to your router through a network storage device.
Go to Linksys's website and search for NSLU2. "Robert L [MVP - Networking]" <nore***@hotmail.com> wrote in message news:ur2zKP2LHHA.1424@TK2MSFTNGP04.phx.gbl... Second, your old computer must be running Windows XP or other OS that will allow you to network (XP would be eaisier for a novice) Third, Click on START and then on "My Network Places" in the blue rectangle on the left you will see "Set up a home or small office network" Click that. Run this on BOTH computers, enabling file and printer sharing and make sure you use the same name for the network on BOTH computers (the default name will work) AND that each computer has a different name, e.g. "OldComputer" and "NewLapTop" When this is complete, go back to "My Network Places" and you should see the hard drives from the old computer on your lap top.... good luck Gordon wrote: Show quoteHide quote > I bought a new computer.
