ICS for direct parallel connectionI think I understand the issue from reading all the other threads here, but I
just wanted to verify.... I have an older laptop running XP Home SP2 connected to my desk top running Pro SP2 through a direct parallel connection. Even with the connection made, I am unable to turn on ICS for my DSL internet connection on my desk top. This isn't possible is it? And if not, WHY NOT - DANG IT... WHATS THE WHOLE POINT OF DOING A DIRECT CONNECTION THEN ?!? HUH? AND WHATS THE POINT ONLY BEING ABLE TO DO ICS BETWEEN HIGH SPEED CONNECTIONS? WHY NOT JUST HOOK EVERYTHING UP TO THE SAME HIGH SPEED CONNECTION? EXCEPT MY OLD LAPTOP DOESN'T HAVE ANY FANCY HIGH SPEED CONNECTIONS - DOES IT? NO! Sorry, I'm calm now. Any advice would be appreciated (I know better than to ask for help - I know I need it). -- Thanks, Mark Mark wrote:

Part 6 suggests that you can: "Additionally, you can access the Internet. You can configure everything at the same time in the best way for each connection, and use it all at the same time." But Part 1 says, "Strict task sharing results in a one-way direct cable connection. The resources can only be accessed in one direction. To change the direction, disconnect an existing connection, reassign the tasks, and then reestablish the connection." -- Lem MS MVP -- Networking To the moon and back with 64 Kbits of RAM and 512 Kbits of ROM. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apollo_Guidance_Computer In article <7267E147-7974-40EF-AB41-B1C4569CC***@microsoft.com>, Mark

I suspect that's because Microsoft didn't think that enough people would use serial or parallel connections to make it worth its time to implement ICS over them. They've done something similar in Windows Vista, dropping the capability for IEEE 1394 networking because so few people have ever used it. The best solution is probably to add an Ethernet adapter (PC card or USB) to the old laptop and use it instead of the parallel port. -- Best Wishes, Steve Winograd, MS-MVP (Windows Networking) Please post any reply as a follow-up message in the news group for everyone to see.
