Internet sharing with two PCs

I've a little LAN with two PCs connecteed with a crossed Ethernet cable,
I've succeeded in making the PCs see one another but I can't share the
Internet namely in order to enter Internet Explorer from the client PC I'm
forced first to connect to my provider from the server PC (entering username
& password), in the contrary I'd like to connect in the same manner also
from the client PC
if I click on the gateway connection on the client PC I hear the modem
dialing the phone number but then the connection is refused
someone told me I must enable password saving on the server PC and so the
client PC will connect without entering username & password, but I don't
like so because everyone could enter Internet from the client, while he
couldn't from the server
now what is the usual manner to enter Internet from a client without having
to walk to the server PC?
TIA
