File Sharing in a Workgroup With Controlled PermissionsFile "Server" - XP Pro SP2 Client Computers (4) - XP Pro SP2 Router All the PCs are up to date, no updates need be applied. Simple file sharing has been turned off and NTFS permissions are set up to allow all users full control over shared folder 1, and to allow user A and B full control over folder 2, both folders on the file "server." The folder set for everyone to have full control works fine. The folder set to have the two users full control, and no policy for anyone else, continually gives the message: "You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Access is denied." whenever anyone tries to access it. User A and B both log on, with passwords on their own machine, and user name and password are the exact same on the file "server" as they are on their individual machine. There is never an option to enter username or password, it's simply the above message. This does not change if there's a different username and password set for full control, IE: if non-existent user A is given full control over the shared folder, but nobody else has a policy set for them. There is never a user name/password prompt. Additionally: The number of connections remains at the default limit of 10, NBT is enabled, the computer browsing service is enabled, windows firewall is disabled, the guest account has been enabled, disabled and re-enabled, cacls has been applied to assure proper ntfs permissions, the network permissions look right, there are no firewalls installed on any of the computers. Sorry for ending like that, what I'm wondering is if there is a way to
get around this because as far as I can tell, this is supposed to be a basic function in XP, not something you need a domain controller and Active Directory or some random third party software to accomplish. Any help would be much appreciated. sardonic.smi***@gmail.com wrote: Show quoteHide quote > Network Topography: > > File "Server" - XP Pro SP2 > Client Computers (4) - XP Pro SP2 > Router > > All the PCs are up to date, no updates need be applied. > > Simple file sharing has been turned off and NTFS permissions are set up > to allow all users full control over shared folder 1, and to allow user > A and B full control over folder 2, both folders on the file "server." > The folder set for everyone to have full control works fine. Nobody has any ideas?
