Add new PC to home network

I bought the new HP Pavilion with Media Center Edition to replace a Sony VAIO
desktop PC with XP Home Edition. The VAIO is Ethernet-connected to a LinkSys
BEFSR41 DSL Router in another room. There is a second SONY PC with Windows XP
Home also Ethernet-connected to the same router. The router is
Ethernet-connected to an Alcatel DSL modem provided by AT&T. These two PCs
and a Gateway PC running Windows ME have been connected and running this way
for about two years.

I began the replacement by connecting the HP and installed each connection
as I disconnected the VAIO.

When I powered up the HP, it did not recognize the network. So, I went to
control panel, network connections, and local area connection and setup the
HP exactly like the VAIO it was to replace. That is, to 'Obtain an IP address
and DNS server address automatically.

Whenever I connected PC's on this network in the past, that is all that was
necessary. The new PCs obtain their addresses from the LinkSys router that
served as a 192.168.1.1 DHCP server.

The new HP, however, would not accept the address and would instead insert a
default address of 169.254.155.227. It also got a subnet mask of 255.255.0.0
instead of 255.255.255.0.

When I called HP Support, the technician had me connect the PC directly to
the DSL modem, bypassing the LinkSys router. This required me to readdress
the PC with the static IP address provided by AT&T along with the addresses
of their DSN servers. This allowed the HP PC to successfully connect to the
Internet.

That would be fine if I had no other PCs to share the DSL connection. But, I
do and they work fine through the router on a secure private local network.
So this direct connect is not a solution. But, HP says the PC works fine and
they would offer no further support, but that I should call my ISP.

I called AT&T and they said the HP PC works fine through the DSL modem and
they don't support LinkSys routers so it's not their problem, I should call
LinkSys.

I called LinkSys and they said the router is doing what it's supposed to as
evidenced by the successful connection of the Sony and Gateway PCs; I should
call Microsoft, as Windows is not picking up the IP address from the DHCP
server.

The Microsoft Support web page says if Windows XP Media Center Edition 2002
was installed on the computer when I purchased it, I must contact the
computer manufacturer, HP.

So I came full circle back to HP. But, before I do, can anyone offer
assistance?

Thanks Robert. I setup a static IP 192.168.1.155 with subnet mask
255.255.255.0 and this seems to get me further but IE7 will not fully
populate the screen. The status indicates 'waiting for ...' a URL. The zone
also says 'unkown'.  I am using Norton Internet Security 2007 but the results
are the same weather I disable it or not. I'm checking the troubleshooting
links now.

I ping'd Yahoo.com and received 3 of 4 with average time of 89 ms. One timed
out. The second time all 4 were successful with average time of 89 ms. Yes,
those addresses are the ISP's DNS.

Robert L, I read and tried all that applied from:
http://www.chicagotech.net/troubleshootingipconfig.htm

Then I went to ezlan.net/debug and went through steps 1 and 2. I stopped at
step 3 (Winsock XP Fix and LSP Fix) as I was uncomfortable with doing so
without your recommendation.

Again, all three other machines still work excellently on this network
except the brand new HP Pavilion with XP Media Center Edition. I even took
one back to the retailer and got a brand new one in the box so it's not
likely that both machines (or NICs) are bad. Any ideas?

When troubleshooting, I swapped cables with one of the working PCs. Then that
PC began getting the same symptoms. Finally, they all quit working. After
resetting the router, it would not work at all. I replaced the router and
everything works great.  Thanks for your help!
