my internet is too slow, please help

Hi, I'm working on a toshiba computer with a broadband connection, the
problem is that my internet is really slow, I know that it's NOT the server
as I plug the same cable to a different laptop and it works fast, but once i
plug it again to my computer it becomes slow agin, I have explorer and
firefox and both are equally impaired, PLEASE if any one has an idea of whats
goig on,please let me know, thank you very much.

Have you got any P2P software running (BitTorrent, etc)?

Checked for spyware/viruses?

When the laptop is connected to the internet, but not doing anything, are
the data lights on the modem going nuts?
