Downloads Die PrematurelyWinXP Pro for the past several months. I am using a 3MBPS DSL system and, prior to this problem raising its head, have been getting 200-300 KBPS download speeds (why so low is another story) and have successfully downloaded files over a GB (Vista SDK DVD image @ 1.15GB) without any problem. Then in December I tried downloading the DirectX SDK @ 432MB and it failed at about 250MB. By failed, I mean the download dialog box and everything went away. I tried again, but with the same result although it happened @ 224MB. Same thing in January. Finally, this month I tried again with the Feb07 release of the SDK and with the same result. I rebooted the modem, rebooted the wireless router I use, took it out-of-line, and tried a different download file of the same size (the VC# Express install), all with the same result. I also noticed that my free disk space was declining after every attempt, but couldn't find the remnants. I tried the same download on an older system running Win2K and reachable only through the router and it succeeded in downloading the DirectX SDK in 36 minutes. Two questions: 1. What is causing the download on the XP system to fail consistently at between 150 and 250 (about) MB? 2. Where are all of the remnants hiding (I checked all temp directories and recycle bins in sight with no luck)? I figure I'm down several gigs by now and am no closer to getting the download all the way through on the XP machine. It seemed to start when I installed IE7, but I reinstalled IE6 with the same failures and am back to IE7. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Solutions preferred, but being pointed in the right direction would sure help. Carl Carl Thomas said the following On 2/13/2007 9:40 PM:

My problem started a few weeks ago though and I can usually 'fix it' by snoozing (stopping) my Anti-Virus. However, for http://www.nero.com/nero7/enu/nero7-up.php it doesn't seem to help. It is a 190MB file, and the most I've gotten down is 110MB. I even tried running in SAFE MODE and it still didn't complete. WinXP Pro, 2GB memory, 500GB hard drive only 15% used. 7MBPS Cable connection. My problem happens with both IE 7 and FireFox 2.0 Irv
