no permission to access network, but can access mapped folder on networkThis problem has got me baffled. I have a LAN consisting of two XP computers connected by router. I have been using the older machine as a backup device with no problems. I decided to enable network sharing on the second drive of the old machine, for space reasons. I successfully did so on the root folder of the second drive. Then I renamed that drive, and lost it on the network. Rebooting both machines did not help. I started over by removing sharing on the problem drive and instead giving them to a subfolder on that same drive. Still no good. Windows on the first machine tells me mshome is not accessible and I might not have permissions. I am admin on both machines, and the second drive on the old machine works fine. Now here's the kicker. All the while, I can still see and access shared folders on the first drive of the old machine. So Windows on the newer machine is telling me it can't access the mshome network but at the same time doing exactly that. Got to be something simple. Thanks, p. So that base was covered (but I rechecked anyway). Here are the cpsserv.cmd readouts. It quite seems I have an essential services problem. BTW, earlier I stated that Computer Browser was Automatic but Stopped on both machines. Since then I Started it on the main machine only, to no avail even after a long wait. I have the Windows Firewall disabled on both machines, but the CB service is still running on the main machine, and was for these tests. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- *Main machine:* Start CPSServ V1.10 - EMACHINE Find Computer Browser ("browser") Error browsing network: No active service named browser found. My main machine under Network Connections lists three networks: Internet Gateway Internet Connection Disabled LAN or High-Speed Internet Local Area Connection 2 Connected 1394 Connection Disabled I think "1394" is the name of an ethernet card no longer in use. I disabled the Gateway connection earlier today in my attempts to clean things up. On the backup machine however, Internet Gateway Internet Connection Connected LAN or high-speed Internet Local Area Connection Connected Windows here won't let me Disable the gateway connection. I figured it would be better to have only what's needed enabled. Again, both machines connect to the LAN and the Internet via a common router. Thanks much for your expert help. p. I turned on everything I needed to (also put DHCP Client on Manual, which should be ok), and got instant results. I guess I had mapped the folders that I could see before I clamped down on services I didn't think I needed. I learned a lot from your guidance through this problem, via your excellent web site. Much thanks for a great job. p. On Sat, 3 Mar 2007 21:26:33 -0500, Paul_B <pb_public-r.e.m.o.***@operamail.com>
