Windows XP VPN client/server problem

I'm trying to set up a simple VPN connection to another Windows XP Pro
PC from my Windows XP Pro, but I'm unable to connect from either
computer.

I followed the guide at
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/J_HELMIG/xpvpnsrv.htm

Can anyone offer any suggestions? I'm completely out of ideas on what
could be wrong.

Both computers run Win XP pro, there are no firewalls which could be
blocking the connection. The other computer is behind a router (SMC
7004VBR), but is set on DMZ mode in the router so it should be no
problem.

If you are behind a router you may need to open up, or forward the port
that you are using to connect.  The default port for Windows remote
connect is 3389, but you may be using different software.  So, if you
were connecting from within your LAN the ip would probably look
something like 192.168.1.105:3389  If you get outside your lan then you
would need to reference the host ip before the router redistributes
local IP addresses.  It would really help more to know what software
you were using.  Hope this helps.
