Local Network Failure

After receiving a new desktop computer with recent WIN XP installed, it was
connected to an existing home network through a wired router. Initially, the
network functioned correctly and three computers could communicate. The
second day after transferring many files, and establishing internet
connections and installing two printers, the network stopped responding to
the new computer. Attempts to reach the workgroup resulted in a message that
the workgroup was unavailable.
1   The two other computers can still see each otherâ€™s shared files
2   The new computer is shown in their â€œnetwork placesâ€ but cannot be
accessed.
3    The new computer can â€œpingâ€ the other two and they can ping each other.
4    The other two can â€œpingâ€ the new computer by IP address, but not by name.
5   All three computers fail to â€œpingâ€ themselves.
6    Network entry has been re-installed on the new computer several times.
7    Computer names are unique
8    All have the same workgroup name but new computer canâ€™t access the
workgroup despite having the correct name assigned.
9    All computers have one or more shared folders.
10 All computers have non Microsoft firewalls with exemptions for the
network IP addresses.
I have reinstalled the NIC driver and reinstalled WINDOWS XP (SP2)

Any suggestions?

Make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on all computers:

1. Open the Network Connections folder.
2. Right click the local area network connection.
3. Click Properties.
4. Click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
5. Click Properties.
6. Click Advanced.
7. Click WINS.
8. Click the Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP button.

All three computers fail to ping themselves? That's usually caused by
a misconfigured firewall program.
