Ping timed out

Hey guys i am a little new to the windoZE netowrking so had a little
prob connecting 2 PCs to the internet...
well the stats are
PC 1: WindoZE XP (AMD 3000+ , 512 MB RAM) 2 NIC cards , 1 on board and
1 extended .. the onboard jack has been plugged to the broadband modem
and the PC is working fine that is the internet is running okay but the
prob arises when the other computer is connected to the second card
with a crossover cable. i tried a lot to connect the second PC to the
internet but in vain...i assigned the IP addresses and all that stuff
automatically and the workgroup name is also same but still.. one more
thing when i try to ping my second PC it works fine but on the other
hand when i try the same thing from the other PC to the first PC it
says request timed out..
guys i am stuck please help me at the earliest...

Hi - your post is very difficult to read. I think it would help you to get
more replies if you were to break up your sentences into different
paragraphs for clarity, as well as capitalize the appropriate letters. Oh,
and it's spelled "Windows" - when you do otherwise you may be inadvertently
implying that you're a "*nix weenie" ...

That said -

1. You'd be much better off getting an inexpensive broadband 'router'
appliance to share the cable modem connection.
2. If you don't have such a device, you need to use ICS (internet connection
sharing) on the "host" computer, and the second computer should be receiving
an IP address from the host computer.
3. As far as pinging is concerned, check the firewall settings on the
computer that cannot be pinged - it may be blocking inbound ICMP. You can
set an exception for this if you want, as well as for file & print sharing.
