Slow opening files across the networkI am looking at a setup which has 3 pcs running xp home across a network.
The network is created via an adsl wired modem/router. 1 of the pcs is used for the general file storage which are accessed from the other 2 pcs. One of these 2 pcs can access and open/close the files very quickly - ie opening either word or excel files without any difficulty. The other pc however will open the files but can take up to 5 minutes to open even the smallest file - the same applies when trying to save them over the network - very slow indeed. As far as I can tell the pcs are setup the same but I cannot work out why one of them is so slow at opening/saving files across the network. Any ideas would be appreciated. -- Thanks John On Wed, 26 Jul 2006 04:40:01 -0700, John <J***@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote:

I'd start by looking at the name resolution and protocols used. <http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/fix-network-problems-but-clean-up.html> http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/fix-network-problems-but-clean-up.html <http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/address-resolution-on-lan.html> http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/address-resolution-on-lan.html And make sure that NetBT is consistently set. <http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/04/netbios-over-tcpip.html> http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/04/netbios-over-tcpip.html Then I'd look at "browstat status", "ipconfig /all", "net config server", and "net config workstation", from each computer, and try to diagnose the problem. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions precisely (download browstat!): <http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/troubleshooting-network-neighborhood.html#AskingForHelp> http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/troubleshooting-network-neighborhood.html#AskingForHelp -- Cheers, Chuck, MS-MVP [Windows - Networking] http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/ Paranoia is not a problem, when it's a normal response from experience.
