how can i test a router to see if it is still working after a storm?
testing the modem was easy hooked up a modem that i knew worked and sure
enough the modem was bad replaced that and got on line.
but now trying to hook up a home networking system when i connect up the
router i cant get on to the net.
its a new tower with windows xp media center i let windows sent up the
networking but it still dosnt seem to work.
any ideas
?

To find out what's going on, You need to conenct to your router's
config-webpage with Internet Explorer.

To do this, firstly you need to know its IP address. This may be marked on
the router itself. Type this into your browser's URL bar, e.g. http://10.0.0.1

You then need the router password. See the documentation.

If you cannot access the config-page, then either you have a TCP/IP
configuration priblem, or the router is dead.

If you can, then there will be logs detailing what happened in the last
attempt to connect to the broadband line. These should clue you as to the
problem.

BTW, you say you "Let Windows set up the network" I take it you ran the
Internet Sharing Wizard, or suchlike. If so it's highly likley that the
IP-numbering of tour computer has been changed so it is no longer able to
access the router.

If so, resetting the TCP/IP properties of the Local Area Connection, to
allow an automatic allocation of IP address (by DHCP) might be all that's
needed to get it working again. Most routers provide DHCP, and if avaialble
this will automatically number your computer to suit the router.
