I was just wondering if one could use remote desktop connection to use a
scanner on a pc on a home network and if so how do you set that up
effectively so each computer using remote desktop can access it?

Hi
Get All In One that is Network ready(starts at $100) and you are set the
scanner part of the All In One Printer/Scanner etc. is Network sharable.
