Shortly after upgrading to Norton Internet Explorer 2006 one of my computers
was no longer able to access the Internet.
This is one of two computers on a Linksys wireless network. A third is
directly connected to the router. Linksys has determined that the wireless
adapter this computer is using is functioning properly.  It finds and
connects to the router.
But IE can't find any web sites and when I ping a web site there is no
response.
The other two computers have no problem accessing the Internet.
Can anyone help?
Thank you.

Ellary,

Make sure that the DNS server is Trusted by Norton.

If that doesn't help, let's look at "ipconfig /all" for each computer, and label
the problem computer.

I should also add that I uninstalled Norton Internet Security 2006.  Also,
the computer refused to automatically retrieve the IP address of the router
so the IP addresses were manually input. Afterward it connected but  still
could not access the Internet.

Ellary,

Looking at the IPConfig logs shows no problem in configuration.  Let's look at
the symptom.
# What can you do with the problem computer, to say that "it connected"?
# What symptoms do you observe for "could not access the Internet"?  Cannot
access any websites, at any time?  Cannot access some websites, some of the
time?

Read a bit about solving network problems.

And about describing the problems with more detail.

As for the first question, both Linksys thru its own dialog and Windows tell
me I am connected. By connected they mean connected to the router. The
Linksys screen shows it graphically:
Computer--->Router+++>Internet and explains that the adapter is talking to
the router but the computer is not getting to the Internet.
However this is only accomplished using Linksys' setup. And only after
hardcoding IP addresses.  Since it won't acquire the IP address automatically
I question whether it is really connected. My other computer on a wireless
connection has no such problems.
I installed NetStumbler on this computer and it did capture the SSID of my
router.

It may also be important for you to know that instant messaging does not work
on this computer either.
I've signed your guestbook and will be looking thru your tutorial as you
suggest. I'll post anything i find that I think may be important.
Thanks again for your help.

We'll look forward to seeing what you learn.  So far, everything you've
described is consistent with lack of connection to the Access Point.  Consider
this strategy for getting a WiFi network operational.

OK I'm stumped.
I think the problem is based in the fact that DHCP is not obtaining the IP
address automatically.  So I have to enter the IP addresses manually.
Configured this way, when I ping the IP address of the router  I get a proper
response.  But when I try to access the router thru the browser using its IP
address (192.168.1.1) the browser hangs. Is DHCP hosed?

Here's some more info:
The router is a Linksys WRT54GS. The Adapter is a Linksys WMP54Gv4.

Here are the results of the browstat and net config commands run from the
problem computer:
