Unable to browse the network

My laptop has used Client Networking to Print on another printer for years.

Something changed.  I don't know what.

I can surf the net, get my mail, can't connect to Microsoft Windows Network.
I get the error:

Unable to browse the network.
The network is not present or started.
For more information click Help. (Oddly, Help doesn't load anything here.)

Another symptom:  Computer, Properties, "Computer Name" tab, Change (to
rename this computer), "member of" is grayed out!

I've removed and reinstalled "Client for Microsoft Networks", "File and
Printer Sharing".

Rebooted.

Still fails.  Same error.

Hi Sam / Rob

I exactly have the same problem as in Sam's laptop. I dont know why,
suddenly my laptop just can't browse the network and have the same error
message.

Also have the same symptom in Computer, Properties, "Computer Name" tab,
Change (to rename this computer), "member of" is grayed out.

The website didn't really help. I have tried to start the Workstation
service which currently is not started, but it cannot be started - "Windows
could not start workstation on local computer". I have also tried to start
Computer Browser service, but error messages indicate that the dependent
services could not be started.

Is this has something to do with installing third-party antivirus program
(such as Norton Antivirus 2005)?

This is happening independent of the modem, router, other computers, and
network. I think the problem is in the service, it just won't start.

Sam.... how did you end up fixing your problem?

Can anyone help me with my problem?

Thanks a million in advance.

Josh

Josh,

Is the laptop in question a domain, or a workgroup, member?  Are you logged in
with administrative authority?

If it's a domain member, or if you're not logged in with administrative
authority, you'll have to find an authoritative person with domain support.

If the laptop is a workgroup member, and if you are logged in with
administrative authority, run the Network Setup Wizard.  Select the appropriate
selection for Internet service.
