I am a newbie at wireless.  I have had a wired network at home for
years...cable modem, 4 port router and extension hub...works great.
Bought a wireless pci card so that I would have some wireless access to
the network. It installed fine...but network connections shows the not
connected...I tried using the network bridge in connetions, that just
disconnected my wired connection, without affecting the wireless.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Do you use wireless router or ad hoc? How do you setup the TCP/IP?

Hi
The Computer with the Wireless card needs to connect to a Wireless source.
Usually it would be a Wireless Cable/DSL Router, or an Access Point plugged
into the current Router.

Follow-up set to microsoft.public.windows.networking.wireless

Sure you can, see "option 2" in Greg Lindsay's response in
windows.networking.wireless and read Barb Bowman's article to which Greg
provided a link.

But this is by far less desirable than using a wireless router.  Not
only will you have to leave the pc with the PCI wifi card powered on,
but you will be limited to WEP wifi security, which these days is pretty
close to no security at all.

Thanks...I did read the Bowman article...but the setup screens she
mentioned do not come up with my card...and do not look the same in XP
from what she provided...  ad hoc sounds like it would work...but need
a little more detail in how to do so.  I do leave this computer up all
the time and can disable the wireless card when not at home for
security issues.

Jim,
I'm guessing that you also purchased a wireless router. If that's the case
then try unplugging your router. turn off the both computers. Turn the router
back on then the hard wired computer then the wireless computer. For all
intents and purposes they should see each other. If not consult your router
manual to see where you may have gone wrong.
Good luck.
