How can i go about setting up a home network with a server using a
cable modem and a linksys 802.11B router

I have installed server 03 with a domain, and would like it to act as a
file/print/DNS/AD server.

How should i wire my home network?
right now i have the modem into the router, which than goes into the
server and another PC that is running win2000.  I also have a laptop
running winXP home edition (which i dont believe can be connected to
the domain) but i would like it if it were still able to connect
wirelessly to get to the interent

thanks

The first thing you need is a router - your modem is probably not a router
unless it has multiple Ethernet ports on it and/or it includes both wired
and wireless access.  If it does not provide these features, get a router
and connect it to the modem.  Then all computers will connect to the router.

Next, you will need to be sure that the DNS server can resolve external
names, since you'll need to configure the router to give all clients the DNS
server address.  You can't let them get the default DNS server(s) from your
ISP because that will mess up Active Directory.

Next, configure the router to give out the DNS server's address as the DNS
server to use to resolve names.  Then start connecting PCs to the router.
Internet access should work at this stage with any computer.

Finally, start joining PCs to the domain.  Forget the XP Home computer - it
can't join a domain.

I have a linksys 802.11B mode router already connected to my modem with
the server and another PC connected to that same router.

how can i be sure that the DNS server can resolve external names, and
how can i configure the linksys router to give all clients the DNS
server address

how can i configure the router to give out the DNS servers address

right now my current connections are as follows, line in to cable
modem, modem to router, the server is plugged into my router and so is
win2000 and i have a wireless card for the laptop(which i will not be

Hit either the TechNet or MSDN web sites and look up the whitepapers on
running DNS on a Windows 2000/2003 server.

Your laptop can't be joined to the domain, for authentication, but you can still
access domain resources from it.  You'll just have to setup local accounts on
each computer, in addition to the domain accounts.

There are specific DNS settings that you need to make, to use your server
properly.

Physically, though, connecting all 3 computers directly to the router, whether
by Ethernet or WiFi, is the best bet.
