Assigning Static IP Address HelpI am using a D-link DSL-G604T router and it is unable to assign static ip address to specific mac addresses. At least i do not think it has that function. I tried assigning static ip address for my computer through network connections> LAN connection>TCP/IP What values should i put for the subnet mask, DNS and gateway? I tried pointing it to my router, i could conenct to the router but not to the internet. My computer may be connected to more than 1 network sometimes. So if i assign a static ip address, would this affect me logging into another network? I read that i could set an alternate configuration for static ip address, but what if i am connecting to a network which i know nothing about. For example, i connect to my own home network and school network as well. I am also sure that the ip i am assigning is outside the range of DHCP. I would like to assign static ip address is because my network places is unable to update the computers on my workgroup. And not allowing me to access another computer's files. But when i entered the ip address of that computer, i can access it right away. However, the ip address may change and so i am considering setting up static ip address. Suggestions anyone? Thanks assuming the router IP is 192.168.0.1, you may assign 192.168.0.2, mask 255.255.255.0 and default gateway 192.168.0.1 and DNS 192.168.0.1.

If i assign the same values that my router assigs for DNS, gatway, etc, will i be able to connect to another network? By setting a static ip address, will this affect the connectivity to other networks is my main concern. Because my computer is connected to a few networks. Thanks work on other networks unless those networks use the same settings as yours. That's not likely. Why do you want to assign a static address on your network? Specifying an alternate configuration with the static settings won't do what you want. That only works when you connect to a network that doesn't have a DHCP server. These programs let you store multiple network configurations and switch between them easily: NetSwitcher http://www.netswitcher.com MultiNetwork Manager http://www.globesoft.com/mnm_home.html Mobile Net Switch http://www.mobilenetswitch.com -- Best Wishes, Steve Winograd, MS-MVP (Windows Networking) Please post any reply as a follow-up message in the news group for everyone to see. Why i want to assign static ip? Well, i get so frustrated when i want to transfer files between 2 computers that are switched on and logged on to the network, but could not find any of them in the workgroup. But when i enter the ip address that was assigned to each computer, i could then access the files. And so i would like to create a shortcut that allows me to access the files without me finding out what ip address it is assigned today. Because the next day the same computer may be assigned a different ip address. And i would need to find out, etc. That's why i would like to assign static ip. The links you provided me below, will allow me to assign a static ip for one network and use dynamic ip address for another? In my experience, network browsing using My Network Places is so unreliable that I recommend not using My Network Places at all. You don't need to assign a static IP address to get reliable access to the other computer. Create a shortcut to the other computer, and specify the location of the item as "\\computer", substituting the actual computer name. Yeah, i agree that my network place is very unreliable. I have tried your suggestion before and that's why it made me want to assign static ip. I did try entering "\\comp1" and attempt to access that comp1. But it gave an error message that such as: "\\comp1 is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The network path was not found." But when i type in the ip address of that comp1 on another computer, it works. I am sure both computers are on the network with internet access. Any good suggestions?
