I have a win xp pro sp 2 machine where the firewall is greyed out and I tried
to reset it via the Gpedit.msc control panel with no luck? It mentions a DNS
setting that can overide the group settings does anyone know where this DNS
setting is?

Is the Windows Firewall/ICS service started? Also check dependencies. To
check go to "Start -> Run" and type services.msc at the command line.
Highlight the Windows Firewall/ICS service, right-click and go to Properties
and make sure the service is set to Automatic and its started. Select the
Dependencies tab to see what other services must be running...
