XP Home Edition SP2 & Pro SP2 network problemI'm trying to set up a home network with the following components, a
desktop running XP Home Edition SP2 with a printer attached, a laptop runing XP Pro SP2, a Linksys WRT54GL wireless router, a DSL modem. I want to share files and printer on my desktop. I ran network setup wizard on both computers and rebooted them. I chose to share files and printers on both. The laptop machine could see the desktop machine as part of the MS network I had created, but couldn't access file or printer on the desktop. The desktop couldn't even see the laptop computer as part of the MS network. Any help is greatly appreciated. yz Hi,
Go to Control Panel and select printer. Right click to the printer and select properties. Then you check Share. After that go to Security tab and check permissions. There are several other possibilities too, and any might be the cause of your problem. I'd shared folders on both computers and printer on desktop machine, but none worked. Since the desktop couldn't even see the laptop, there were other issues other than sharing, I believe. I quickly checked Chuck's blogs. There are several things I can try to debug my problem(s). I'll keep you posted. yz Chuck wrote: Show quoteHide quote > On 21 Aug 2006 22:50:25 -0700, "YZ" <yizhao.em***@gmail.com> wrote: > > >I'm trying to set up a home network with the following components, a > >desktop running XP Home Edition SP2 with a printer attached, a laptop > >runing XP Pro SP2, a Linksys WRT54GL wireless router, a DSL modem. > > > >I want to share files and printer on my desktop. Follow the steps to share the folder(s). I don't think you have to set a lot of permissions with XP Home, it should use just simple file sharing. Do the same with the printer, go to Start -> Printers and Faxes -> then right click on the printer you wish to share and select Sharing. Follow the steps there to share the printer. Patty |
