Tony,

Is the desktop computer running XP Pro?  Then you need to disable Simple File
Sharing, and setup and activate a non-Guest account with identical, non-blank
password, on each computer.

XP Home does not permit sharing of users' home directories (My
Documents) or Program Files, but you can share folders inside those
directories. A better choice is to simply use the Shared Documents
folder.

If the laptop is running XP Home, anything you share from there will be
accessible to anybody on the network.  You can use Advanced File Sharing on the
desktop, setup non-Guest authentication, and have some protection there.

If you're connecting the laptop to an untrusted network, anything on the laptop
accessible to anybody is accessible to everybody.  And you will have to do as
Malke suggests, and keep your shared files in the Shared Documents folder.
