dynamic ip addressMy computer can't find a dynamic ip address. I changed from dial-up to
broadband and my computer couldn't find the address. The install tech hooked up his laptop, found the address and changed my computer to static, loaded the correct address and broadband worked. Now I need to install a router to share connection with a second computer. The second computer installed fine, auto address found and works good. The first computer when set to dynamic(auto) ip address is always "acquiring network address". If I change to static ip address and enter correct ip info the broadband works fine. I have reset the tcp/ip, and looked at everything I could find. The computer is xp pro, current updates, no bugs, stable, runs norton, spysweeper, zone alarm, etc. I have un-installed zone alarm and am using the windows firewall. When I run the Intel pro set diagnostics I get "connection failed". The rest of the tests pass. I installed a Linksys ethernet pci card, new drivers, etc, with the same results. Any information or direction would be great. Considering the following from your post "If I
change to static ip address and enter correct ip info the broadband works fine. " Exactly what is the problem? - Cable/Broadband providers utilize static addresses which is desirable over a dynamic address. first step in install is to be sure the computer is set to auto find address. It's not the same as if you "reset the tcp/ip". <http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/problems-with-lsp-winsock-layer-in.html> http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/problems-with-lsp-winsock-layer-in.html -- Cheers, Chuck, MS-MVP [Windows - Networking] http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/ Paranoia is not a problem, when it's a normal response from experience.
