Internet Connection Problem - Cannot Renew IP Address

I have a desktop computer at home with a DSL modem.  I just started getting
an error that there is "limited or no connectivity".  When I click to repair
it, it says that it is trying to renew the IP address.  It churns for a while
and then says that the IP address cannot be renewed.  I called my DSL
provider, who walked me through some common fixes (like disabling and then
enabling the network), but nothing worked.  Their conclusion is that I need a
new network card.

Does anyone have any recommendations on what I can do to try to fix this
problem?  I have relatively no experience with connection issues like this.
Also, is there any way to check and see if it is in fact our network card
before we go ahead and buy one?

Thanks!

Have you made any changes to this computer?  I'd look at LSP / Winsock
corruption, but knowing why that might have happened would be a good idea too.

Paranoia is not a problem, when it's a normal response from experience.

We have not made any changes to the computer, however, our symantec program
did detect a worm last week (W32.Netsky.P@mm!enc) that came through our
email.  It supposedly quarantined it, but could this have caused the problem?
Also, what is LSP/Winsock corruption?

The LSP / Winsock is a portion of the network code in Windows where malware is
frequently attached.  If you had a worm removed, this is a very likely culprit.
Read the article, please, it explains this in more detail.
