Intermittent Internet Connection Lose...PLEASE HELP

Using XP Home Edition with all of the current updates....

Computer is now connected directly to a cable modem, although a few
weeks ago I had used a router and ran an ethernet cable from the
router to this PC.

I've noticed some significant time-out problems with my email for the
past week or two and recently I've had intermittent email time-outs
and connection problems to the internet.

Called Time-Warner Cable and they are empathic that the signal to the
cable modum is fine, that the "IP address is not processing correctly"
and if it continues, to call a pc "pro" or reformat my HD.

Did some ipconfig testing and got the following for both my IP Address
and Default Gateway:

PING: transmit failed, error code 65

I uninstalled ZoneAlarm & still have an intermittent lose.

I've found that re-booting or using "Repair This Connection" both
restore my connection!!!

I've done some Network Diagnostics>Scan Your System testing---

The scan before the connection dropped showed everything Passed.

The scan during the connection outage showed that Network Adapters,
DNS Servers, Default Gateways, and DHCP Servers all Failed

The scan after "Repair This Connection" fixed the problem showed
everything Passed.

Any suggestions???

Check your network-adapter driver's properties for a 'power-saving' option,
and turn it OFF.

I just checked and it's set for "Use normal amount of power...."

The other choice is "Use low power...." and that is UNCHECKED!

I ran diagnostics on Network Adapter and all passed.

INTERESTING-- the "Event Log Messages" for network adapters shows 4
Errors, the first coming on the day that I lost internet connection
entirely. (I've had email time-out problems MANY more times than the
4 listed here, including today.)

Suggestions?

Hi,

I am also experiencing the same issues. I have been monitoring my router
status during the drop off and it seems that the external connection remains
live.. Very wierd. At first i thought it may have been DNS related but i
added a specific firewall rule to and monitred. Still the same issue. Even
whilst writting this i have experienced 2 loss off connections to the net.
This is becoming very annoying... It seems alot of people across the globe
areexperiencing the same thing...

During the loss of connection i initiate a ping to www.google.com -t. I get
a "request time out" response. I then repair my connection and it fixes the
problem... So i thought i might perform a "netsh int ip reset reset.txt"
Still the same problem...

Please Help.

I also forgot to mention that i am running a ZoneAlarm firewall. At first i
thought this was the culprite, but i removed it, ran a reg clean against it
and i still had the same problem... Is it possible that a recent patch has
caused this?

It seems rather odd that mostly XP machines are experiencing the same issue
over and over.

I have the same problem, and I do the same you do, I fix the connection, but
it is annoying, I hope We can find some solution to the problem.

Interesting...I wish I had an answer.

My internet connection remains solid, but my email timeouts continue.

In the middle of an email timeout, I tried to ping mail.adelphia.net
and all looks fine!!!!

Does a ping of a mail server mean anything???

Hi Guys,

I have finally debugged the problem. It ws Zone Alarm. The version i was
running had a flaw whereby the firewall would drop the TCP port 445 and all
connections woould fail and the TCP stack would cease. I fixed this by
uninstalling and removing all entries from the registry (very carefully of
course).

I then performed a reg cleanup (which i hate doing) to ensure that all
registry assocoations in my software hive had been removed.

I then downloaded the lates version. Whish i could give you specifics. My
machines HDD died last week right after fixing it hahaha the irony. Anyway
after i installed it i ensured that i allowed traversing between specifc
TCP/UDP ports that i used and never saw the problem again....

I have since performed alot of testing and my connection remains live. I
performed a drwatsn32 /p (PID) against the truevector service to see if it
fails when it releases its hold on the machine and i saw an error when
releasing TCP. The minidump showed some very interestin things. Again i can't
show the specifics as my machine is dead...
