Duplicate computer nameI have a problem with my computer name. I had an advent computer downstairs
which I called Advent downstairs. When I got a new computer I moved Advent upsatirs and renamed it accordingly. My new computer is Packard Bell downstairs but the network thinks it is Advent downstairs and gives aduplicate name warning. I have tried changing the name in my computer properties and it seems to accept this but when I do a Packard Bell system check it says the computer is Advent. Is this anything to do with the fact that the Advent was the internet connecting computer and now Packard Bell is? Is there anywhere else I can change the name of the computer? The computer name is limited to fifteen characters and cannot contain spaces or any of the following special characters: ; : " < > * + = \ | ? Call them Upstairs & Downstairs and leave the Advent part out.

computer name screen shows the new name I still get a duplicate name warning. Could it be because the ip address of the new computer is the same as the old one was by virtue of being connected directly to the bt broadband modem? but the sytem name refused to change, but I manged to change the system name in regedit and things seem to be ok at the moment. Malke Acessories, system tools, system information, user name Advent/sallyanne.
It makes no sense to me either as I never ever told this computer it was advent. But it is packardbell/sallyanne now. User accounts are created in Control Panel>User Accounts. You cannot change an existing user account by simply renaming it. All the files/folders will remain in the old user account name. Instead, you create a new account, log into it once, and then copy over the old user account settings (if desired) or simply delete the old user account. here. The actual netbios name (Compuert Name) is lised as the "Full Computer Name" when you go into the System Applet. YOu could also use that same name as the description but in terms of netwokring, the description is meaningless. -- Show quoteHide quoteMCP (2K) Net+, A+ Server-Networking MVP "Malke" wrote: > sally clarke wrote: > > > Please could you tell me how to post a screen shot on here and I will > > show you what I mean. > > Use a free image hosting site. > > Malke > -- > Elephant Boy Computers > www.elephantboycomputers.com > "Don't Panic!" > MS-MVP Windows - Shell/User >
