Internet connectionI have a problem based on my lack of knowledge on XP. I have two issues: I’m running XP SP2 Home Ed, and I have a very poor knowledge on XP. 1) I have installed my Internet connection with a “speedstream adapter software†through an USB cable connected to my modem a "speedstream 5200" model. XP have created a “Local Connection†and has assigned an IP address of 169.254.32.172 with subnet mask of 255.255.0.0. I do not know how this IP got embedded in the adapter. No idea. It doesn’t let me repair the connection and consequently connect to my ISP network (ISP uses DHCP). Therefore, I had to create a “dial up connection†not local, and it works fine, I can access the Internet. However, if I disable the “local connectionâ€, I am not able to connect to the Internet. The Local connection must be enable in order for the “dial up connection†to work. Note, I have an identical PC with the same settings and it only has one “local connection†and I can access the Internet. the local connection has the DHCP address assigned by the ISP. I hope someone with expertise and knowledge can understand my issue and advice me on how to fix it. 2) How can I make my “dial up connection†to become permanent connection. I mean, so it starts, when XP starts so I do not have to connect every time I get into the Internet or my email. I have enabled automatically connection but I just wonder if I can embed with the Logon start-up. Best regards to all. thanks, Alex >>> On 9/11/2006 at 12:58 PM, Alex<A***@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote: ....XP have created a “Local Connection” and has assigned an IP address Hello Forum, of 169.254.32.172 with subnet mask of 255.255.0.0. I do not know how this IP got embedded in the adapter... 169.254.x.x indicates that Windows did not receive an answer when it asked for an IP address via DHCP, and therefore it assigned itself an address using Automatic Private IP Addressing (APIPA). After it does this, it continues to check every few minutes to see whether a DHCP server is present. Your ISP is probably the best source of help for resolving the problem, they should be able to help you configure the connection correctly. It sounds as if your modem is failing to answer the DHCP request, or something is blocking the response it sends (overzealous client firewall maybe?) More information on APIPA: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/windows2000serv/reskit/regentry /58851.mspx?mfr=true Hello Dan,
First of all, I want to thnak you for your response. I havea firewall running. I did not know it so i'm going to disable it and I will contact the ISP. However, How can I make my “dial up connection†to become permanent connection. I mean, so it starts, when XP starts so I do not have to connect every time I get into the Internet or my email. I have enabled automatically connection but I just wonder if I can embed with the Logon start-up. I mean, so it starts, when XP starts so I do not have to connect every time I get into the Internet or my email. I have enabled automatically connection but I just wonder if I can embed with the Logon start-up. I don't know. You shouldn't even need the "dial-up" connection if you fix the problem with your ethernet adapter so that it gets appropriate IP information. If it were me, I'd go that route, instead of trying to work around the problem with a secondary dial-up connection that isn't really dial-up. Dan,
Thank you for your help. I'm going to work this issue today (friday, sept 15, 2006). I'' let you now what is the outcome. thanks..
