Cannot view Windows 2003 server on Windows Xp workstation??

Hi
Our company has a windows 2003 server.
All the workstations except one can see the server in "View Workgroup
computers" on their windows xp workstations.
The laptop however cannot see the server, however it can see all other
pcs on the network.
I can ping the ip address of the server from the
workstation(laptop),and in turn can ping the laptop from the server.
I take it that somewhere there is a problem with DNS or WINS,as there
doesnt seem to be name resolution.
Is the problem on the server or the workstation and what must i do to
correct this problem?

Thanks in advance

What do you receive if you do "ping -a server IP?

Is NetBIOS over TCP/IP enabled everywhere?
Are all clients registering properly in WINS?
Is the WINS server the master browser; do you see browser election errors in
its event logs?
You might consider stopping/disabling the computer browser service on all
workstations.

Hi
I looked on the 2003 server and i see that Netbios over Tcp/Ip is
disabled under DNS.Not sure why?
When i try a repair on the Net card on the w/station i get an error
saying cannot clear arp cache.
Interestingly i managed to view the server momentarily under "view
workgroup computers",but after a few seconds the server name just
disappeared.Weird.
It looks like theres a prob on the workstation?
What commands can i run on the w/station to check what the heck is the
prob?

Thanks

Because you didn't enable it?

Check your event logs.

Are you not using AD? Why not? :)

Maybe. Hard to say.

You didn't answer my questions re WINS. Also, now that you've mentioned
you're using a workgroup, you might provide more info about your network
configuration. I erroneously assumed you were using a domain.

To your first question the guy who administered this network purposly
didnt enable Netbios over Tcp/Ip...Dont know why.
To your second question how/where do i check the event logs?
To your third question what is AD?How do i do that?
Regarding WINS,it is enable on the server and on the workstation.

Thanks for trying to help me out...

You can change that. That's going to help loads.

> To your second question how/where do i check the event logs?

I usually go to start | run, and type eventvwr <enter>

> To your third question what is AD?How do i do that?

AD is Active Directory. It's a domain, instead of a workgroup, and gives you
centralized security, and a lot of other really nice features. You should
definitely do some reading before you go down that road, to make sure you
understand what it is and how it works (note that DNS is really critical to
the proper functioning of AD).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Active_Directory  might be a decent place to
start.

> Regarding WINS,it is enable on the server and on the workstation.

Make sure you've enabled NetBIOS over TCP/IP on all, and then make sure they
all show up as registered in the WINS database.
