Does anyone know if is it possible to CNAMEs in a Windows hosts file? The
obvious name and alias entry does work leading me to believe it can't be
done.

Any ideas?

Robert,

A hosts file entry is simple.
IPAddress URL
where URL = subdomain.domain.tld, no wildcards or expressions, exact matches
required.

DNS, with CNames and the other amenities, was developed long after Hosts was an
established component in IP networks.

No. Though LMHOSTS can have #INCLUDE directives, which is useful for
temporarily adding a group of names.
