Remote Support XP <=> 2000 Professional

Hi,

I'm trying to provide support to a Windows 2000 machine. I plan to use an XP
SP2 box to do so.  I've been reading articles involving installing the
remote client on 2000, and a number of things are still unclear.  The client
is > 100 miles away, so I don't want to travel all the time for relatively
small changes.

Here's another part of the issue:

The 2000 client is behind a router/firewall using NAT (192.168.1.x range).
Will I need to configure the firewall to forward port 3389 to the 2000 box?

Who initiates the session? Do I remotely logon from here, or does the client
make a request? Is it doable though e-mail as it is in XP <=> XP sessions,
where the requester sends a file?

Thanks,
Mike

Well, unless the W2K box is running Terminal Server you can't use XP Remote Desktop to connect to
it...

You could use VNC (any flavor) as an alternative. Personally I use and recommend UltraVNC with its
encryption plug-in. Get the server, client and encryption plug-in from...

http://ultravnc.sourceforge.net/

Another alternative is to run UltraVNC (or any other flavor of VNC) through a VPN or SSH tunnel.
Personally I do the later...
