internet connection drops when idle

I just got a new XP machine and I leave it on all the time. I also have a
cable modem which is always on.

When I try to access the internet in the morning, or when I come home from
work at the end of the day I have to restart the computer an then have
internet access.

A friend had this problem some time ago and there was an option "somewhere"
that was either "On Demand" or something similar to that. It was checked and
when I unchecked the box the problem disappeared. I have forgotten how to
get to that option and was wondering if someone could direct me to where I
can find it?

Brian,

Look for a power saving setting on the network card.

Thanks for the link to your blog

"Allow the computer to turn this device off to save power". I have unchecked
that feature and the problem persists.

OK, find out what is losing connectivity, and when.  Get PingPlotter (trial
free), and start it periodically pinging your ISPs DNS server.  See what
connectivity is being lost.

It only looses connectivity when it is idle for a long period of time (like
overnight). That is why I want to know where to find the option to uncheck
"On Demand" which when checked keeps the connection open as long as it it
demanded, but then goes offline when there is not a constant demand.

I have found a work-around - I leave OE open and checking mail every 15
minutes.  That keep the connection active, but doesn't solve the problem.

I have the same problem, but I have Outlook check mail every 1 minute and it
still drops connectivity. Seems like a number of people have this problem.
Anyone who has solved it please let me know.

Thanks.
