Hello there,

I have a strange problem and I have tried as much as I know and now I am totally helpless and rely on you to help me.

I have MS XP home and I want to share folder etc and want to be part of a network.

Since I use my laptop in two different networks I use alternate configuration. One needs to obtain a IP automatically and the other is fix. Going to the internet is not a problem at all but sharing folders. And whenever I tried to map a network drive or to see other Computers of my workgroup in most cases it does not work. Without changing anything sometimes I see the other workgroup computers and sometime I doesn't. When I see them, really seldom it happend that I can connect to one of them, most times not the one I want. This can change within a minute and I do not know why. Sending a ping works every time. I swiched on on and of firewall, just in case this is a hinder. No change at all. There is no system it it when is works and when not (and moste times it doesn't!!!!!) and I do not have a clue why. (when I tire to connect the system say I do not have a network acces and I should ask the admin, but I am the admin and have set every thing for sharing even the link station is open to all users.

I really do not know why it works sometimes and sometimes not without changing anything!!!! I need to connect to a link station but right now I cannot rely on it and its useless for me. With my desktop PC it works just fine, no problems at all (The configuration is the same, only two difference are that this one has MS XP Pro version as OS and uses just a fix IP. But another laptop use the same configuration as mine and it works!!)

Please help me and give me hints because I really need the network connection and the sharing option.

Thanks in advance. Sissi -- sissi3o2 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ sissi3o2's Profile: http://www.msusenet.com/member.php?userid=2186 View this thread: http://www.msusenet.com/t-1870535831

Sissi,

When you say "sometimes I see the other workgroup computers and sometime I
doesn't.", this is a classic browser problem.

Here's a diagnostic procedure:

And here's a detailed discussion of the problem:

Hello Chuck,

thank you so much for helping me.
Ok I did this browser stat and this where the results:

Laptop

As you can see I did it 3 times each with different settings. first was with Computer Browser Prop. start up type automatic, second with disabled and third with manual.

The other PC gave this results (I have only access to one pc, but all of the other are configured the same):

Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]

Status for domain S E H on transport \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{4F669F7E-C83C-4AE0-BF5

With this one I do not have any problem at all.

The laptop has XP home the other xp pro.
Seeing the other workgroup members ist not the main problem, the main is getting access from the laptop to the other and the linkstation. The desktop Pc's have these problems not, wired or?!

Do you have a solution for that?? I am not a it specialist but I am doing my best with guidance and I appreaciate your help so much. Thank you!!
Lots of regards

Sissi,

What is LAPTOPROMY?  Is that the laptop?  A laptop should not act as a browser,
if you're going to be moving it from one network to another, and doing Windows
Networking (ie file and printer sharing) from both.  There has to be a master
browser on each network, whether or not your laptop is connected to either.

You need to start by Stopping and Disabling the browser service on LAPTOPROMY.

You'll not be able to see computers in Network Neighborhood / use a master
browser in both by just simply moving the laptop back and forth between the two
networks - your laptop needs to be a member of the domain or workgroup at any
network when connected.  Try looking in Network Neighborhood - Entire Network -
Microsoft Windows Network for a list of workgroups - then look in the right
workgroup for the computers in any workgroup.

Maybe a mobile configuration manager will help - there are 3 listed in this
article.
