Hello,

I just noticed that my computer name shows in emails in the "From" section
along with the IP address.

This doesn't happen on all my computers, just my laptop.

How can I hide my computer name?

Windows xp pro.  I have a wireless network (secure/hidden) + zone labs
firewall.

Thank you
scott

I don't see IP addresses or computer names in the "From" section of an
E-mail message.  I sometimes see them in the section that starts with
"Received: from".  Is that what you mean?

What goes into that section is determined by your E-mail sending
program: a web mail site, Outlook Express, Eudora, Mozilla
Thunderbird, etc.  The sending program's name sometimes appears in the
"X-Mailer" section.

What do you use to send E-mail on the laptop?  Is that different than
on the other computers?

Hi Steve,

yes the "received from" and yes you are correct, I use outlook express on
the laptop only.

So I need to go into outlook to correct the issue?

thanks for responding.

Steve (or anyone)

Is there a way to change the parameters in 'outlook' to prevent the computer
'name' from showing up?

Thanks
scott

Hi, Scott.  Programs like Outlook Express use the Simple Mail Transfer
Protocol (SMTP) to send mail, as defined here:

http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc0821.txt

The command that the mail program uses to open communications with a
mail server includes the host name of the sender.  Outlook Express
uses the computer name for that, and I don't know of a way to change
that behavior.  Sorry.

Why do you want to change it?  If your computer is properly
firewalled, I don't think that sending your computer name is a
security risk.
