Is it possible to eavesdrop on what other users are talking about with MSN
Messenger?

It depends on what you mean by "eavesdrop". Post back with more details
about what you are really trying to do or are worried about.

If you are wondering whether a school IT systems administrator can see
what you are typing to others in an instant messaging client, then the
answer is "it depends". If surveillance/keystrog loggers have been
installed previously, one can easily read instant messaging logs.

Lets say if a system administrator wants to check what people at the
workplace are chatting about on the network.

I would count on the sysadmin being able to do that at work. So if you
want privacy, don't chat at work.

In theory it's entirely possible.  Since the System Administrator controls
the horizontal and vertical, she (or he, in my shop he is I <g>) could
easily install a packet sniffer, capture network traffic, then examine
packets of interest - say, packets using the known chat protocols.  Or as
Malke has observed, there could already be software in place that does this
and you just don't know it.

I would suggest that if you are the administree that you review your
company's policies on internet and network use and abide by them.  If on the
other hand you are the administrator, you should review your company's
policies on network use and monitoring and abode by them instead.
