Network Connection Icons Are Goneappologize for any protocols or standards that I am about to step on. This problem is similar to another post, "Network Connections do not show" submitted by costas, however, I did not install an analyzer application. What I did do was uninstall and reinstall the suite of Norton products that I use including Norton SystemWorks 2006 and Norton Internet Security 2007. These actions were recommended by the Norton software when I was unable to open an embedded application (Norton Anti-Virus) by using the icon from within the Start > All Programs menus. I also moved my wireless cable modem from it's previous location and hardwired it to the desktop PC in question. After restarting the PC (windows comes up okay - mostly) I was unable to connect to the internet. Eventually I discovered that all the connection icons were missing from the Network Connections service window. My other laptop computers are using the wireless connection and accessing the internet just fine. I've tried numerous times to create a new connection but no icons are added to the service window. Further, the Network Setup Wizard does not execute at all. I'm probably in a little over my head here but if anyone has had a similar experience or can suggest what to try I would appreciate it. Do I need to re-install XP? Duane Hello
Usually when you can not see network connections in the control panel folder named "network connections". There could be a few items that would cause your network connections not to be shown in the folder and taskbar. 1) Try... control panel > administrative tools > services 2) scroll down and look at Network Connections ..make sure the start type is set to Automatic and the service status is Started. This is usually the cause of network connections not being shown. If Network Connections service is functioning ...then try 3) Also make sure this drivers is started and working... control panel > administrative tools > computer management > click on device manager ...then right click on it and choose < view >show hidden devices on the right menu scroll down to Non PLug and Play Drivers expand this menu + and look at these drivers to make sure the have no red x on them. Double click or right click > properties >general tab and make sure every driver says "This device is working properly" and then look under< driver tab> make sure the settings are correct Under Driver tab AFD............... Current Status : Started & Startup Type: System TCP/IP Protocol Driver............... Current Status : Started & Startup Type: System Netbios over tcp/ip............... Current Status : Started & Startup Type: Demand If these are all working...next step 4) In the same device manager menu Scroll to Network Adapters menu and make sure your ethernet card is listed here and driver is installed and working. or try re-installing the drivers that came with your ethernet card Lastly if all else fails 5) Re-set TCP/IP by using Netsh this might fix your network connections Follow the instructions on this page http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=299357 I hope this will help Hi,
First, thank you for the response. In following your instructions, I encountered two situations that I could not resolve. When checking the drivers to ensure that they were started and working, the following two items had the yellow circle with an exclamation point displayed over their icons. IP Network Address Translator TCP/IP Protocol Driver As instructed I went to properties > driver, each are indicated as stopped and neither will accept being started. When trying to start the IP Network Address Translator I get a message saying "...dependency group or service failed to start." When trying to start the TCP/IP Protocol Driver I get a message "System cannot find specified file." Otherwise I did change the Network Connections service to indicated "Started" and "Automatic" as well as verify that both my NIC and wireless adapters are installed and functioning properly. I also tried your last ditch suggestion of using the netsh command. I got a message saying "Could not obtain host information from machine: [hostname}. Some commands may not be available. Access is denied. So I think what I'm going to do now is upgrade XP from the home edition to Pro (which ismong overdue anyway) and see if that re-establishes the Network Connections. I you have other suggestions I would like to hear them, otherwise I'll post again when I know how the upgrade worked. Thanks again, Duane Show quoteHide quote "Marbles" wrote: > Hello > > Usually when you can not see network connections in the control panel folder > named "network connections". > > There could be a few items that would cause your network connections not to > be shown in the folder and taskbar. > > 1) Try... control panel > administrative tools > services > 2) scroll down and look at Network Connections ..make sure the start type is > set to Automatic and the service status is Started. > > This is usually the cause of network connections not being shown. > If Network Connections service is functioning ...then try > > 3) Also make sure this drivers is started and working... control panel > > administrative tools > computer management > click on device manager ...then > right click on it and choose < view >show hidden devices on the right menu > scroll down to Non PLug and Play Drivers expand this menu + and look at these > drivers to make sure the have no red x on them. > > Double click or right click > properties >general tab and make sure every > driver says "This device is working properly" and then look under< driver > tab> make sure the settings are correct > > Under Driver tab > AFD............... I just got done battling this issue on a Windows 2003 Server machine and have experienced it over and over on XP workstations. There was a security update awhile back, June, I think, that started this problem with the TCP/IP services, and there hasn't been a fix for the longest time. To my luck, there was a fix issued October 10, 2006 that I found out about too late and this issue showed up on my 2003 servers, including my PDC. First, try the Microsoft KB Article 825826 Then, go this route Microsoft KB Article 913446 and Security Bulletin MS06-007 Hope that helps!
