Odd domain log on problem

i have found the reverse of this problem elsewhere in groups but not
the exact problem.

2 users have reported that they are unable to log on to the domain when
they have a network cable attached.

if they unplug, they are able to log in, presumably cached log in, then
attach the cable and have full access to the network.

I am very confused by this! any ideas would be wonderful.

perhaps worth noting that I have 150 other users with the same /
similar set up not having an issue

What exactly happens when they try to log in with the cable connected?
Exact error messages, if you please.

exact message following entry of password and clicking ok as follows:

logon Message

Windows cannot connect to the domain, either because the domain
controller is down or otherwise unavailable, or because the computer
account was not found. Please try again later. If this message
continues to appear, contact your systems administrator for assistance.

Have you tried removing and re-adding the two computers to the domain while
they are connected to the network?

Are these computers set up to use only the domain DNS controller to resolve
IP addresses?

I guess the next thing I'd check would be the event logs on the clients and
servers to see if you can identify what the failure is.  The client logs may
not yield a lot of clues but matching entries to them in the server logs may
tell you what's failing during the logon process.

Have had a development on this.

The logs showed nothing by the way.

When users try to log on with the cable in they get the above error.
Previously unplugging the cable, entering the password then worked.

Now however after the failed log in with cable, you cannot log in for
at least 10 attempts with the cable unplugged!

Eventually this works, and you can log in and connect the cable and
carry on as normal.

This is really getting to us now! We can find no good reason
whatsoever!

Frankly, I don't have a clue why this should be happening; and your comment
that when disconnected they have to try to log in at least ten times before
it works is a complete stumper.  I have never seen that kind of behaviour in
any networked or non-networked PC.

The only things I can think of to consider would either be to check for
infestation with viruses/adware/malware, or to take one box and consider it
a "sacrifice" - rebuild it from the ground up and see if it still has
problems.

Well, maybe one other thought - how many domain controllers do you have?
Are they synchronizing correctly?
