Network access/logon to user vanishes and Guest appears in its placeI have had my two-system home network running for a long time - my computer
accesses my wife's (via a password) and she can access mine the same way. We are both at XP SP2 (though I only recently upgraded to SP2 from SP 1). She can still access mine but when I click on her computer under "Microsoft Windows Network"/NetworkName/Mary I get a prompt box with "Connect to Mary" at the top, an information line of "Connecting to Mary" and the User name GRAYED out as MARY\Guest. Previously the "User Name" in this box had been the name she uses to log onto her system (maryabcd) and I would provide the password and be able to access it. When enabling the Guest user in her system(which I did not like to do) and changing it's password I still could not get to it (message about \\Mary not being accessible.... Logon Failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer). But I don't want to log onto her system as Guest - I want to get back to where I was before. I have no idea where to start. I did uninstall Symmantec PC Anywhere on her system but that seemed to have no impact

If so, make sure that it's properly setup for network access. <http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/file-sharing-under-windows-xp.html#Help> http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/file-sharing-under-windows-xp.html#Help <http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/file-sharing-under-windows-xp.html#NonGuest> http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/file-sharing-under-windows-xp.html#NonGuest -- Cheers, Chuck, MS-MVP [Windows - Networking] http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/ Paranoia is not a problem, when it's a normal response from experience. My email is AT DOT actual address pchuck mvps org. Yes, MaryABCD is the account she uses to log on. I eventually solved this,
though I don't understand why, by adding "Everone" via the "Security" tab of the folder's being Shared. It had either been removed (by who/what?) or had had not been previously needed and was now needed either due to some XP security patch or because of a new firewall policy on my system. A bypass that also worked was to use the actual internet address of her system instead of the her system name. Which leads to questions of hosts/lmhosts etc. But the Everyone fix supplanted the need for the internet address Show quoteHide quote "Chuck" <n***@example.net> wrote in message news:lnqth297hmjvr06n7jvkvaph5unh8fgqup@4ax.com... > On Sat, 30 Sep 2006 12:26:31 -0500, "Ron" <ronsher***@us.ibm.com> wrote: > >>I have had my two-system home network running for a long time - my >>computer >>accesses my wife's (via a password) and she can access mine the same way. >>We are both at XP SP2 (though I only recently upgraded to SP2 from SP 1). >>She can still access mine but when I click on her computer under >>"Microsoft >>Windows Network"/NetworkName/Mary I get a prompt box with "Connect to >>Mary" at the top, an information line of "Connecting to Mary" and the User >>name GRAYED out as MARY\Guest. So I guess the question is why did this need change? If the addition of "Everyone" resolved the name resolution problem too, you should look at restrictanonymous, or maybe RestrictNullSessAccess. <http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/07/restrictanonymous-and-your-server.html> http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/07/restrictanonymous-and-your-server.html <http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/05/restrictnullsessaccess-and-your-server.html> http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/05/restrictnullsessaccess-and-your-server.html Show quoteHide quote >Yes, MaryABCD is the account she uses to log on.
