connecting laptop to desktop cable modem"Joan" <J***@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message Add a router which you place after the cable modem but before all of your news:61DE61D5-5D5D-47D1-AE47-C0099E84C7A0@microsoft.com... > how do i get my laptop on line computers. Connect the desktop to the router with an ethernet cable. Insert the router setup CD into the desktop and let it configure the router and the desktop for internet use. Finally, you can connect the laptop to the router via an ethernet cable or via wireless. Wireless is more flexible but less reliable. The Network Setup Wizard can create a disk which will do most of the setup of your laptop and, this is most important, the disk will insure that the basic setup of the computers are consistent. However, configuring the wireless interface on your laptop depends on the manufacturer. Most of them have a setup disk which will walk you through the process. The reason for such a special disk is that the Wireless Network Setup Wizard cannot setup many of the wireless adapter. Be sure to enable WAP encryption on the wireless signals unless you don't mind your neighbors using your access to the outside world. WAP encryption employs a key (which you get from the router), and entering this key correctly can be very tedious. I spent about an hour getting wireless networking going, and about 55 minutes were spent getting the key correct. Jim i have my laptop connected to my cable modem directly with a usb cable.

Has it ever worked with this configuration? Did you have another system getting access before? Do you have an account with your ISP? Set-up disk from ISP? Support number for ISP ? <J***@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote: >how do i get my laptop on line? i have my laptop connected to my cable modem The best solution, in the long run, would be to stop using the cable>directly with a usb cable. modem's USB output and to connect the cable modem's Ethernet output to a broadband router. The router would give Internet access to both computers. If the cable modem doesn't have an Ethernet output and you can only use a USB output: 1. Connect the laptop and desktop computers to each other using Ethernet. 2. Enable Internet Connection Sharing on the desktop's USB cable modem connection: a. Right-click the USB cable modem connection. b. Click Properties > Advanced. c. Put a check mark in the "Internet Connection Sharing" box. -- Best Wishes, Steve Winograd, MS-MVP (Windows Networking) Please post any reply as a follow-up message in the news group for everyone to see.
