I have a d-link ethenet/802.11g router connecting a desktop running xp
pro and a laptop running xp home. File sharing works between the two
computers but it took me hours to get it going. i now have a new laptop
running xp media center edition, and i can't get it into the workgroup
or file sharing. i have tried it with both wireless and wired
networking. firewalls are all disabled, netbios is enabled, pinging
works using ip address, but not comp name. the wizard has been run, set
to same workgroup. netbios was the problem between the original two
computers, so now i have no ideas. any help would be appreciated. if
you need any more info just ask.

i found an extra firewall that i didn't realize was running, pinging
now works on all computers using ip or name, except i can only ping the
new laptop over the wired connection, using the ip for the wireless
connection times out.

i can now view the new laptops shared folders, but it cannot view the
shared folders of the other computers.

This problem is semi-solved. file sharing is working everything is
great, if he is on the wired network, still no pinging through
wireless. any creative insights would be great, but i am not overly
concerned at this point, as i can transfer the files that i need to.

Check the d-link router to make sure the new computer is able to get an ip
address through dhcp.  Also check to see if mac address filtering is enabled.
If it is add the mac address for the new computer to to list.
