wired router and desktop to wireless laptop

My setup is this.
I have a wired router which connects my desktop to the internet, and it
has a wireless network card installed.
I also have a laptop which has a wireless card and Ive got the wireless
connection up and running. However, I must be missing something because
even tho I have file sharing enabled, I cant see the laptop from the
desktop and vice versa. Neither can the laptop use the internet
connection.

Im running WinXP Pro on the desktop and WinXP Home on the laptop.

Any ideas as to what steps I have missed out?

Thanks in advance

Hi - there's something not right about your post.  You say you have a wired
router but the laptop is wireless.  The laptop won't be able to use the
internet unless the router is wireless or you use an ethernet cable.  Also,
you didn't mention if the desktop could connect to the internet or not - but
you stated too that there was a wireless card in it as well.  I'm a little
confused. :-|

Yes I have the desktop connected to the internet via the traditional
wired/ethernet card and 4 port router. There is also a belkin wireless
card in there too for sharing it with the laptop.

This is a new pc and Im just trying to configure it the way I had the
old one. It did work ...honest :P Although the wireless was a bit dodgy
and dropped a bit at times.

Ive had it work before like this so I must just be missing something.

What is the router/switch connected to for the Internet connection:
dsl/cable modem?
You should be able to share the desktop to the laptop WITHOUT
the wireless card in the desktop if the desktop is hardwired to the
router.  It is just a matter of getting the shares and permissions worked
out if they can ping each other?

I re-read you op.  Sounds like you were using your desktop to act like a
"gateway" for you laptop.  Then the solution is different.  I have a
Linksys WRT54G and it is pretty much a no brainer.  For the frustration
they relieve, they are well worth the money.

The best solution, in the long run, would be to replace the wired
router with a wireless router.  A wireless router would give Internet
access to both computers.

The solution is much more complicated if you use a wired router:

1. Set up an Ad-Hoc wireless network between the two computers.  If I
understand your setup, you've already done that.

2. Check the IP address that the desktop's wired Ethernet connection
gets from the wired router.  If it starts with 192.168.0, configure
the router to use a different value, such as 192.168.1.

3. Enable Internet Connection Sharing on the desktop's wired Ethernet
connection:

  a. Open the Network Connections folder.

  b. Right-click the wired Ethernet connection.

  c. Click Advanced.

  d. Put a check mark in the box "Allow other network users to connect
      through this computer's Internet connection.

  e. If it asks what to use for the home network connection, tell it
      to use the wireless connection.

4. Run the Network Setup Wizard on the laptop. If the Wizard detects
the shared Internet connection, tell it to use that.  Otherwise, tell
it that the laptop connects to the Internet through another computer
on your network.

Make sure that any firewall program (Norton, McAfee, ZoneAlarm,
PC-cillin) on either computer is configured to allow access by other
computers on the local area network.
