Novice with a network problem

I've had a small network set up here at the house for some time now.  It
consists of two notebook computers, and a desktop computer, all running
Windows XP Pro.  Its primary purpose is to share files across the
network and back up the notebooks to the desktop on the weekly basis.
Each of the three systems uses a logon password.   The network has been
running perfectly until recently.

One of the notebooks has suddenly decided to no longer accept password
input from remote systems.  We've tried resetting the password, to no
avail.  It works well for the logon, but will not allow remote access to
the files.  I'm far from a network expert, but I'm willing to try
anything anyone might suggest, in order to correct this problem.

If I've failed to provide enough information, or I can expand any
further on this dilemma, please let me know.

Any help anyone can offer will be greatly appreciated.

John,

What has changed recently?  Have you added any security software?  The first
possibility would be a personal firewall, or other security component.

What is the complete and exact error message, or problem that you see when the
computer in question won't "accept password input from remote systems"?

Be as descriptive as possible.

With XP Pro, there are several interesting system settings that you should
check.

Chuck,

The problem turned out to be me!  When resetting passwords, I was
spending time resetting the logon password of the computer user and not
to guest password which was the proper one.

I have, however, discovered a wealth of information on your webpages.
I'm now tempted to take a look at advanced file sharing.  I have no
doubt that I will have more questions as I delve into this.

Thank you.

Thanks for the update, John!  As I've said so many times
If you make mistakes, you're using your computer.  If you don't, you have a
computer.
So, you're using your computer.  Come back any time, we'll try to help you sort
your networking problems and questions.
